Protesters angered by the policies of Haitian President Michel Martelly and his ties to the United States rallied in front of the US embassy in Port-au-Prince Friday. Police fired tear gas and baton rounds, making an unknown number of arrests.
The protest comes after thousands of Martelly critics protested November 18 in the Haitian capital in rallies that turned violent as rocks were thrown and shots fired. Those rallies were among the largest since Martelly took office in 2011.
The US is the largest trading partner of Haiti, the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Foreign military forces have intervened in the nation on numerous occasions, and a UN peacekeeping force is currently stationed in the country.
